It was sometime in the mid-90's that I first had any
thought of going natural. No, it wasn't to wear a TWA or an
afro or twists or coils, but to get Sisterlocks.
Yep, that was my first online exposure to natural hair
acceptance and I practically drooled over the idea of no
longer having to relax my hair but still have a lot of the
same styling versatility. I had sent off for the Sisterlocks
Information Kit and even had a telephone conversation with
Dr. Cornwell herself because I was living in Washington
State and during that time, going to the home office was the
closest thing I would get to a SL consultant.
That was short-lived, though. I told some folks about
what I was planning to do and I got SO much flack for it, I
just let the idea go. I guess you could say I didn't have
much of a "back bone" back then.
But, thankfully, some years later, I came across
Sisterlocks once again. By this time, there was a LOT more
information out there and that is how I ran across personal
SL journeys of women such as Sandy, Moyosafi and of course,
Pat!
All of the sites were very inspirational to me, but Pat's
website, I can remember sitting at my computer for literally
at LEAST a couple of hours just gazing at her pictures and
reading her story.
I eventually discovered a whole WEALTH of information for
natural hair, period. Discussion forums, personal journals,
websites...it was just overwhelming, but in a good way.
So, I went natural and eventually started my own journey
to locs. Not Sisterlocks, but locs just the same.
It was during my 2nd month of locking that I attended my
first Detroit Nappy Hair Day and guess who I got to
meet...Sandy and Pat! Two of the women who inspired me the
most during my natural hair/locks research.
I remember when Sandy was going to introduce me to Pat
and immediately when I saw her I said, "YOU'RE PAT HUNLEY!"
and she looked at me like, "Chill gurl" LOL!

These are pictures taken at the Detroit Hair day I
attended April 2001. This was my first time
meeting Cherie. She had brand new "BradLocz".
This is the beginning of Cherie's journey and part of
the birthing of her book series. |
But she was cool people and still is to this day...we
even talk on the phone sometimes! I have had the pleasure of
networking with Pat and many other women I've met on the
'net and networking together to get more women to accept and
embrace their naptural hair, however they choose to get
there, is a beautiful thing indeed!
