I have been natural off and on since June 1999.
Relaxers were destroying my scalp and sitting through the
process was just too painful. I'm sure some of you have been there. Of
course, I hadn't seen my natural hair for over forty years and didn't know
what to expect or how to take care of it. I figured I would just wash it put
it in several (five) fat braids and let it air dry. Once it was dry I would
simply (ha, ha, ha) unbraid it, finger comb it and go. Boy wash I wrong! My
medium length abundantly thick hair (I didn't know how thick until I wet it)
had other ideas.
It did not dry overnight and the finger
combing was a big joke. I believe I had 2nd degree hair cuts (like paper
cuts) all over both hands the first and last time I tried. The more it dried
out during the day the higher away from my head it rose. It rose so much I
thought there must have been some baking powder in the leave-in conditioner
I used. Obviously, I was misinformed and woefully under educated about my
natural hair. However, I was not willing to give up and began searching for
information on caring for my type hair. It took several years and many other
style errors and "gentle" chemical treatments to finally find the solution I
was looking for.
I tried several times to get my hair to lock.
Locking was something my hair really didn't seem to interested in and after
the last try (11 months without combing only washing and twisting) to wash
it vigorously and have the scary "hafro" from the seventies come back. Just
to let you know COPA did nothing for me except thin out my bank account.
Several treatments later my hair was still the same. I even tried a
texturizer recommended by Dr. Suny I found on line. It seemed to be my
answer for truly manageable hair. After a year my hair was limp, lifeless
and without body, sheen or luster. I braided it up and after a few months I
cut off all the DEAD hair again.

In the fall of 2002 two after I spent
fourteen exciting hours braiding my hair into small sections. I swore I was
going to leave my hair braided until I was fifty (only four years away) if I
had to re-braid it myself. During
this time I was still searching on-line for some
possible solution to what I considered a major hair dilemma. That's when my
search turned up this thing called "sistahlocs".
Then I found Pat's site and read
her hair journey and consumed all the pictures. I visited it at least 20
times in three days. As I searched further I found that the correct name was
SisterlocksTM. I read everything I could find. I'm sure I went to the
SisterlocksTM website at least a zillion times. I studied the pictures and
I'm sure I had memorized every word. However, I was disappointed because I
didn't see any consultants in Northern Kentucky.

In October 2002, I decided I would travel to Columbus, Ohio and see the
consultant there. I called and left a message. To my delight she told me
that Pat was now located in Cincinnati and gave me her number. I was so
elated that this woman whose hair journey I had internalized was within my
reach and I could talk with her in person and best of all touch her hair!! I
scheduled a consultation and it was the beginning of a journey I have
embarked upon that is developing into to a life changing adventure. I
scheduled my locking appointment for early December because our schedules
were in conflict for the next couple of weeks. We started on December 5th
and only nineteen hours later I had my SisterlocksTM.
There was no turning back. I couldn't be happier. Water is no longer the
enemy. I was still pumped from the consultation and knew that I was not the
only sistah looking for a non-chemical solution to her hair woes. I decided
to take the consultant class the second week in December in Detroit. I
haven't looked back. I'm rocking great locks. Enjoy the pictures. They take
advantage of my natural hair texture and amaze me more each day. And to top
it all off I'm a consultant and soon to be the 1st certified consultant in
Northern Kentucky. The bonus of it all is that I have a wonderful new
sister-friend that I wouldn't have found if it weren't for the SisterlocksTM.
We have been working side by side since I was trained.
We know that the
future has a world of opportunities for us in Ohio-Indiana-Kentucky tri
state area and we are getting ready for the SisterlocksTM
