Stay out of my Kitchen!!!
“Don’t Hinder Me”

As a culture we’ve spent many years in our
kitchen both preparing great eats
and doin' some
HAIR.
In most of our homes that room is the focal point of our living space.
Our Mothers, Grandmas and Aunties would spend countless hours preparing us
 for our Sunday
“GO to Meeting” look.

This is where we learned how to cook Soul Food, heard family history,
taught grooming techniques, and found out why it's
important to stay out of "grown folks" business.
You would never butt in or add any thing to a conversation.
Manners were a must not the exception.

 I remember being told
"What goes on in here is between
 you, me and THE WALLS"

Modern day translation ... you didn't hear nothin' or see nothin'.

Come on get yo hair "DONE"

"The Kitchen Kulture Classroom"
was the focal point of our learning experience.
Hair was the subject of study.

So the question is how does state laws affect
 our cultural craftsmanship???
Depending where you are located
this question could be a real issue.

Dr. JoAnne Cornwell , Sisterlocks™ founder, fought the state
of California on this very issue.

Go to their web site for details about their court victory.

Several states now have laws requiring a license in order
to do Natural Hair. The Hair Care industry
has mixed opinions on this subject.

Some schools even include lessons on weaves,
which I feel has nothing to do with Natural hair care.
Other states force you to learn chemical techniques,
which is very contrary to why I got Locs in the first place.

In most cases few schools offer just natural hair course
and those that do are
inaccessible to most state residents.

Doesn’t sound like THEY are really trying to help us out … does it???

So ..Stay out of my MIX… OK????

Below is a copy of an e-mail I posted
on several of the on-line Natural Hair care discussion groups.

Conclusion:
I'm currently in the process deciding  whether
or not to take additional course work at this time.
I checked into attending
Moore Universite' of Hair  Design in Cincinnati, Ohio
www.mooreunivofhairdesign.com

This school does offer a Natural Hair curriculum that would satisfy the state requirement of 450 hours.  This course work would not include the use of chemicals which is good.

One of the problems with licensing a loctician is how do you determine or regulate what is a good Lock?

I'm still researching how the state would test your skill level.

I would greatly appreciate feedback on this subject.
