In our continual effort to build bridges between the community and the academy, the Black World Studies Program and the Office of Multicultural Services on the Miami University, Hamilton campus are pleased to announce an exciting and unique symposium on the politics of hair in the African American community. 

 The Natural Hair Symposium: A Celebration of Culture, Consciousness and Liberation will take place on Saturday October 18, 2003
 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Harry T. Wilks Conference Center.
  In addition to a variety of workshops, our keynote speaker will be
 best-selling poet, author, essayist and activist Nikki Giovanni.

Hair, like skin color, carries a long history of controversy within the African American community.  Hair projects a person’s style, sense of self and even sense of values. It defines beauty and impacts social politics.  The purpose of this symposium is to provide a forum for African American women and men, as well as others, to dialogue about the politics, psychology and liberation of natural hair. The Natural Hair Symposium will provide the opportunity to dialogue about a topic that has been and continues to be a sensitive issue within the African American community.

We believe this is an important topic and event for Miami University, the Hamilton campus and the Oxford, Hamilton and Cincinnati community.
